August Newsletter 2016

With the weather being what it is with sporadic thunderstorms and heavy rain, it's no wonder our pets may be feeling anxious or frightened. Phobia of thunderstorms is common in many dogs and they may express this in a range of different reactions. Some may tremble and look for a place to hide, while others may bark excessively, pant and pace, soil inside the house, or attempt to escape. Not only can this cause your pet to hurt themselves, it can also be distressing for you as a pet owner being unable to comfort them.

Fortunately, we have two over the counter products which have proven to be very effective in helping relieve anxiety in situations that cause a fear response.

Calmex is a nutraceutical, made up of a unique blend of two amino acids, a plant extract called Piper Methysticum used in healing with anxiety, and B- vitamins. It comes in a capsule form for dogs to be administered 30-60 minutes before desired effect, and as an oral liquid form for cats that can be used long-term.

Adaptil is a synthetic version of the pheromone released by mother dogs to comfort her pups and helps give dogs reassurance in stressful environments – it’s like giving them a big hug! Adaptil comes in three different forms - as a plug in diffuser, a spray, or as collar that is heat-activated. There is also a feline version called Feliway that is a synthetic copy of the pheromone released when cats rub their faces to mark their territory a safe and secure. Feliway comes as a plug in diffuser as well as a spray and can help reduce many stress-related behaviours.

For more information on any of these products or for further advice on dealing with anxiety behaviours, feel free to call or come in to speak to one of our nurses.

Other news:

- If you've been in to visit us recently, you may have seen that we have a new staff member on board - a very cute and fluffy one, that is! Cirrus is our new clinic cat who has already made himself at home and is quite the character! Be sure to look out for him prowling around the clinic or helping out with reception duties next time you stop by.

- Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing a nation-wide shortage of Broadline, the combined flea and worm topical treatment. Stocks aren't set to be replenished until the end of August so if Broadline is your parasite treatment of choice, please speak to one of our nurses on what product would be best to use for your pet in the interim.

All the best,

The team at Whangaparaoa Vet Centre
